Chilled Beam System

A chilled beam system circulates chilled water through coils inside ceiling-mounted beams. Room air is cooled as it passes over the coils.

There are two primary types:

  • Passive Chilled Beams: Rely on natural convection. Warm room air rises to the beam, is cooled by the water-filled coil, and naturally descends back into the occupied space.

  • Active Chilled Beams: Use conditioned primary air supplied by the ventilation system to induce additional room air across the cooling coil, increasing cooling capacity while also providing ventilation.
